| | | Hollingworth lake Great northern diver. Hi all !
Just gotta recommend this bird to you all, Great northern diver at Hollingworth lake Littleborough outside Rochdale, Greater Manchester.
I think today will be the 4th day it has been present, and it is giving great views at times, coming right up close to the edge of the lake and within several yards of folks !
This is a lifer for me and thats why i am so chuffed with myself for going this afternoon, especially without having to settle for a speck in the distance and struggling to i.d the bird at 60x through my scope ! The bird was undisturbed by the sailing boats and just seemed to amble around the lake minding its own business it even seemed unaffected by the prescence of peaple walking close by along the path. I was also lucky enough to meet a fellow birder called Bill from Stretford who was very helpful ( hi Bill if you read this )!
it was really worth the trip from my native Accrington 30 odd minutes drive away !
If any of you can make the trip to see this bird whilst its still around please do..not sure when the next one is gonna turn up !
Days like this are few and far between for me...and we have snow buntings on Pendle hill !!!
HAPPY Birding to you all !!! |

| | | Re: Hollingworth lake Great northern diver. I saw this Lancashire gem yesterday, showing exceptionally well. Worth a look, providing the incessant rowers don't slice it in two with an ill-directed prow. And yes, with snow buntings on owd Pendle like Boogle says, Lancs is the place to be at the moment.

Ken | The diver is a good bird for 'the lake' these days. It is poorly managed for wildlife really, with far too much water activity. Saying that, I saw a common scoter on there the other week and of course, there was the collared pratincole way back in 1983.
If it goes to Castleshaw Ken, I hope it makes a brief stop at Ogden whilst it's on it's way.

| | | Re: Hollingworth lake Great northern diver. I'm tempted to go and see this, seeing as it's not far from me, but the tricky part is planning the bus routes lol
