Angry English Hen Harriers on verge of Extermination

Today we are able to report that the raptor politics web site has issued a strong rebuttal for the reasons being put forward by Natural England for this year’s low number of successful Hen Harrier nests on England’s upland Grouse Moors.

For further details of Natural England’s Press Release and what Raptor Politics have to say on this important issue, follow the following URL Raptor Politics - Illegal Peregrine and raptor persecution in the North West of England

Re: English Hen Harriers on verge of Extermination

I noted one of the headers there-

Are England's birds of prey really protected by law?

Short reply - No they aren't.
It doesn't help when the person employed by United Utilities this Summer (who share the land with 'Lord Farquar Smyth Thingummy') is laid off just as the nestling harriers need protecting..... needless to say they were all wiped out in order to preserve the 'game' on his Nib's land.

A very emotive subject but I've said my piece. Status and Money will always win out in these situations and the law , in general, is too friendly with the 'criminals'.

Totally agree. No they arn't protected in certain areas. And as you say status and money always wins. There is a similar thread at the moment about crofters and White tailed sea eagles. The main differance being the crofters are worried about the loss of income whilst their lordships are worried about the loss of their pleasure shoots!
And not only are these criminals friendly with the law but they may even being royalty or closely connected. There's no hope as far as I can see.

Now going to hide as i've just accused royalty and i'm probably going to get hung for treason!!!

Re: English Hen Harriers on verge of Extermination

Sadly Im basically resigned to the fact that hen harriers will cease to be a breeding species in England within the next few years and outside the odd RSPB reserve in the UK as a whole. Its a sad state of affairs but the gamekeepers will get what they want but the grouse will continue to decline anyway, thanks to the grouse mites and the disease they carry

Re: English Hen Harriers on verge of Extermination

I see the Forest of Bowland is owned by the Duke of Westminster. If I recall (and I'm going to give away my age here!) this is the same 'noble' that paid just one shilling in tax one year through tax avoidance (not evasion). At the time he was one of the wealthiest people in the country!

First against the wall, comes the revolution!

not good, really not good.

I don't quite know what to say about this. But i hate to say it, but this is not a suprise. It seems that no matter how hard people try to save something special in this country, something seems to stop it!

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/new...cle6893781.ece

this was in the news a few days ago but i only read it today, but i feel it has some relevance to this thread, i don't know whether its been discussed on the forum elsewhere.

anyway, i think it displays how no matter how much people care, money really does make the world go round. it angers me, it really does.
its like the article in the latest bbc wildlife magazine about the leisure complex in the south rannoch area of the caledonian forest.... argh!!!
