| | | Osprey Saw my first Osprey last Friday in East Sussex. It was flying and hunting over water and dived once unsuccessfully. Lots of crows were mobbing it on its forays. First for me . The fishing was poor unfortunately

| | | Re: Osprey They're Great birds. Have seen them at Loch Garten but the best for me was recently at Cockshoot Broad in Norfolk. Went there to take pictures of ducks and geese with my new lens and found this little beauty in the trees. |

| | | Re: Osprey I've watched Ospreys in (K) Bay, Scotland fishing for up to two hours without a capture, this was at a time when many dives were taken over the high water period and with capable juveniles.. There must be a high rate of missed strikes.
Southward migrating Ospreys seen in South Lakes take a chance strike but rarely catch a meal.
They're not around for so long on migration so keep your eyes peeled. |

| | | Re: Osprey I've been lucky to have a resident pair which patrolled my usual stretch of river, when I lived in Sweden (the Ljusnan river at that point is shallow and about 250 yards wide). You'd see them (one at a time) go in a regular pattern, hunting upstream, and they'd get a fish on every third 'beat', on average. They didn't often get trout but took mostly what the Swedes call 'sik' which is a salmonid, a little like a cross between a grayling and a chub.
It's great having a natural hunter showing you where the hot spots are
Apart from that, there were otters, cranes and beavers galore... |

| | | Re: Osprey There was an item on the television local news this evening. It said that they were putting up poles with the beginnings of nests on islands at Stokers Lake in Rickmansworth, Herts. to tempt ospreys to nest.
I live only about 5 miles from Stokers - I'll keep a look out and report back if I see any activity.

Jim | Hopefully when the Ospreys return next year, they'll choose Stokers Lake, but you'll probably have to wait until then for any activity! |
