| | | where do all the waders and gulls go i just remembered a question we asked ourselves while we were in norfolk and couldn't answer.
where do they all go when the tide comes in? we saw them flying back on to the muddy shore as the tide started to go out, from the land, but we've never seen any waders sitting in a tree, or poking round in a field. and i know we all see gulls over farmers fields, etc., but not in the numbers we see them on the shore or estuary. so what happens to them?
i'm sure someone here will know |

| | | Re: where do all the waders and gulls go Generally speaking waders go into fields to root around for food (such as Curlew, Plovers and Godwit) Smaller waders will roost on the very edge of high tide areas or on small 'islands' that are created by the rising tide. Similarly gulls will go inland to fields, landfill'rubbish sites etc, or even just float around on the water. It all depends on the local Geography and tidal flow.

| | | Re: where do all the waders and gulls go thanks adam. i suppose i shouldn't be surprised we've never seen any in a field, they're so well camaflaged. and i guess i've never looked. i was only saying to someone on a different, totally unrelated forum, that you really don't see birds until you start to look properly. i don't just mean waders, but even garden birds. what i would have put down as a sparrow in the past, could actually have been a dunnock, a wren, a juvenile robin..... and birds i've seen floating in the sea i would have assumed to be 'a seagull', until i saw an eider through my bins!
thanks again. |
