| | | Not another Manky?
Taken recently in the park. Doesnt look like a 'proper' mallard, but none of the ones I see look like the ones in the Gallery. So what do you think it is? Nice duck tho...

| | | Re: Not another Manky? It had the most beautifully patterned feathers. Is this the time they moult?
Out of interest - what do you call that zizzy (interference )pattern? I've seen that on gadwall I think.

| | | Re: Not another Manky? Ducks are just finishing their moult.. at the end of summer the (males especially) loose their bright colours and look like the females, as we move towards winter the colours reappear.
Many of the mallards in town parks, especially those breeding there, will have some domestic duck genes in their ancestry, this one looks like a normal 'wild' mallard. |

| | | Re: Not another Manky? I was attending a small livestock show earlier this month and was surprised at the amount of pedigree ducks there are that resemble "manky mallards"! No doubt they all have their own breed standards but at first glance (to the untrained eye) some of them do look like crossbreeds
It got me wondering whether we sometimes write off some ducks as "manky ones" when in fact they are somebody else's pride and joy
