weird duck beak - ID please

so i dont really know whats going on with this duck cos it looks pretty standard but has this really weird beak going on - does any one know what duck it is?

Looks like a female Shoveler, it isn't a species I'm familiar with though, I'm sure someone more knowledgable will confirm or correct.

oohh this sounds familiar! think your right, cos i kept getting the word spoonbill in my head but its that i wa after. might wait and see if others agree though

It does look similar to a female shoveller but going by the photos in the Gallery it does have some differences. I wonder if it is a mallard x Shoveller or plumage difference caused by moulting. The beak looks like a shoveller.

Agree female Shoveler with brood; but where out of interest did you take this photo?

lee on solent - at the (i think rspb) reserve there. Its in hampshire on the south coast
