When I got up this morning, I saw that my partner had left some of his clothes hanging on the washing line overnight, which is not unusual. What was unusual is that several of his garments had blue tits perching all over them, and one of his tops was being attacked by the birds! In particular the small embroidered logo on the breast of the top was being repeatedly pecked at by the birds who were clinging on to the fabric around the logo in order to peck at it. Other birds were clinging on to the neckline of another top and having a go at the washing label inside.
When I went outside the birds flew off and I was able to inspect the garments - which did not have flies or other bugs on them as I'd first thought they might have. On close inspection, the logo that had so interested the tits showed signs of damage with threads pulled out and broken by the birds pecking, likewise the stitching around the washing label on the other top. The top in question was brown, and the logo embroidered in dark red thread. The other top was black with a white washing label.
I've never seen blue tits do this before - indeed although the local birds perch on the washing line when it's empty, they actively avoid it when there is washing out - presumably because the garmets flap about in the wind. This morning was very still and the washing in question had dried overnight. I wonder what attracted the blue tits? I can't believe they were actually easting the thread.
