barn owls

just taken the kids home and was on my way back when a quick flash out of the corner of my eye saw an owl. spun the car round and went looking for it but couldnt see anything. turned round again to head back and a gorgeous barn owl appeared in the head lights. lost it again and moved up along side the field and lo and behold its sat 20 feet away on a fence post,not a care in the world.then up it goes about 6feet up hovers for a couple of seconds and pounces on a victim and comes back up to the fence to eat it. had a good preen and then flew round again. all the while in the distance we could hear tawnies and little owls calling. only saw the barn owl for about 15 mins but what a wonderful sight. my 1st time seeing one really hunting in the wild.ive seen them on reserves flapping round boxes etc but this was for real if you like.

well spotted, I managed to get my first sighting and photo on holiday recently and that made the holiday for me, well done

I used to have large greenouses in the corner of a field, often i would go in early evening during winter to fire up the heating and time and time again i would see a Barn Owl traversing the field looking for rodents, he used to fly at just about head height and not a sound from the wings, totally silent, a lovely bird to view, i used to enjoy every minute i could watching that gorgeous bird.

I had a barn owl land on the computer room windowsill one night. I don't know who was more startled to see the other one, me or the owl.

Gorgeous bird, came back a week later - presumably it realised that the odd cave with a ledge was inhabited, because it didn't come back after that.
