Black Hooded Blue Tit?

He's a good one!

I managed today to get some images of a very rare bird, it's supposedly a blue tit, what do you think?

Nice one eh?

Re: Black Hooded Blue Tit?

Just to confirm, this is genuine! I've not made the bird up!
It was first seen 3 years ago, then vanished, it came back to Whisby last week. It took me three days to get it.

Re: Black Hooded Blue Tit?

that is sooooo gorgeous. is it just a genetic mutation or something? what's the lifespan of a bluetit? it's not ringed is it?

Well blow me down. Never seen anything like that before Graham. Cor! Is it really a blue tit? If it was there 3 years ago is it that old or are there others? Seriously unusual! great shots too. Julie

Re: Black Hooded Blue Tit?

I think it's an aberrant Great Tit- I vaguely remember seeing pictures of a similar bird elsewhere. The proportions look wrong for Blue Tit, but right for Great Tit. Still a bird to get you scratching your head.

Re: Black Hooded Blue Tit?

These are quite a common occurance according to the link below.

There have also been reports of such birds in Norway, Denmark and Holland as far back as 2002.

Re: Black Hooded Blue Tit?

I was going to say they had one at Whisby, then i read your second post

I suppose the are some freaks in nature aren't there, and this is definatly one of them, it looks a really nice bird actually it's maybe a throwback to how blue tits used to look like? in the same way some people have tails etc

Re: Black Hooded Blue Tit?

It looks more like a Great Tit but the colour scheme is very deceptive. Either way a fantastic looking little bird.
Thanks for posting this Graham, great images, could you send some to Mark please as I know he will be really interested in this.

I really thought this was a PhotoShop job until I read all the posts. What an amazing bird!

I thought it looked more like a Great Tit variation, but it's only the size of a blue tit. The local on site expert insists it's a blue tit..
It's head is blue, the expected white of the Blue Tit is black, plus the wing colours are nearer Blue Tit than Great Tit.
I'm still not at all sure they're right though!

No problem Steve, I'll send him a few more as well that show the size better, it's more the size of a Blue Tit. I agree that the shape looks more Great Tit than Blue.

Thanks for that link, it does look almost identical to this one, so it IS a Great Tit. My original doubts confimed. Now to convince the on site "expert" who insists it's a Blue Tit!

Re: Black Hooded Blue Tit?

Well be it Blue or Great Tit Graham well done on getting the shots and posting them. I haven't seen anything like it in over twenty five years as a bird watcher, but I sway towards Great Tit. Fascinating.

Re: Black Hooded Blue Tit?

I suppose its difficult to say for sure which one it is, like you say it's the size of a Blue Tit, but more the colour of a Great Tit, I wonder if these two species have been known to inter breed as some closly related birds can

A trip to Whisby on Monday may be in order

If you do go, it's obviously seen at the feeding station. We had to wait about an hour today before we saw it. Yesterday we waited for two half hour sessions and just missed it both times!
Good luck!

that is amazing Graham, I've never seen anything like it. It does seem as though it's a Great Tit from the link above. Remarkable. You did well to get some photos of it.

What a little beauty. Well done on the photo capture.
I suggest you contact the RSPB for confirmation. I'm sure they'd like to know about him too

Re: Black Hooded Blue Tit?

I now need a name for it, as it's not actually black but blue headed.
The only info I can find is that one link to Surrey, and that one looks all black.
I've contacted the BTO to see what they say.
