| | Is This Usual For the last 2 weeks in a tree where I run my wildlife session we have been watching a pigeon sitting nest. Today when we went to have a look, there was one chick. It looks like there was another but it has died.
What I want to know is it normal to have chicks this time of year? And what is the chance of it surving? I am not sure if it is being fed and am rather concered about it. here are a couple of photos. One is on the mum sitting on its nest, the other two are of the chick.

| | | Re: Is This Usual I found this (from Bexley) which might answer some questions. Bexley : Feral pigeons in Bexley
Certainly here in London the local pidgies seem to be acting all springlike again

| | | Re: Is This Usual If the weather is reasonably mild as it is at the moment Wood Pigeons will breed nearly all year round certainly it's not unusual for them to have young at this time of the year. |

| | | Re: Is This Usual Thanks loripo and Ollie. I will stop worrying now
The kids have really enjoyed monitoring it over last couple of weeks and were thrilled today when they saw there was a chick.
I will keep watching it and taking photos (as the kids will miss it as they start back to school next week)and hopefully may catch a photo of it fledging.

| | | Re: Is This Usual I have exactly the same in a tree in my garden, I noticed it a week ago and the pigeon is sitting on the nest. I haven't looked for a few days but there was an egg visible last time I looked. I am surprised at how loose the twiggy nests are! I can see right through it in places. I too was confused to see a brooding pigeon at this time of year.
Ollie, thanks for the info which put my mind at rest too.
Loripo, interesting reading.

| | | Re: Is This Usual Pigeons are quite randy birds and seem to be able to breed almost right throughout the year, which probably explains why there are so many of them around.
