| | Green and grey bird, roughly size of black bird I have seen a bird with a grey back and greenish yellowy chest, the size of a black bird. i have not seen it close up as it is always flying from one tree to another, I just see this flash of green/yellow as it flies. it has a distinctive song. Does anyone know what it might be? I don't think it is a green woodpecker as it does not seem to have the distinctive markings on the head.

| | | Re: Green and grey bird, roughly size of black bird Head markings on Green Woodpecker tend not to be seen in flight (and less obvious anyway on 1cy birds - the gizz is a greyish geen/yellow as it flies. However, yellow is on the rump rather than breast.
If the call was 'distinctive', maybe you could describe it for us .. |

| | | Re: Green and grey bird, roughly size of black bird The OP said the size of a Blackbird, wagtails and greenfinches aren't that big. I am puzzled by this one...
Depending where you live is it possible for it to be a female Golden Oriole?

| | | Re: Green and grey bird, roughly size of black bird I would be tempted to say it was a green woodpecker, even though you're not convinced it was. I was watching one recently which looked similar to your description in flight (grey back, etc). The head markings were not obvious to me at the time either. It was only when it called and briefly stopped that I saw what it was for definite.
If not then I have no idea

| | | Re: Green and grey bird, roughly size of black bird QUestion.... is the original post reffering to a Black bird as in the song bird, or a black bird in general.
I know of people that call rooks and Jack daws either crows or black birds. |
