| | | Help with bird id please I spotted this bird in my garden on Saturday amongst the sparrows, great tits and bullfinches, it is about the same size as a bull finch, with a similar beak. The head was black with a light ring around the eye, the chest was reddish brown and the back a striking gold. I cannot find anything about this bird so assume it is an escapee but any help identifying it would be appreciated.
I'm having trouble attaching the picture of it, but it is in the Gallery entitle Unidentified Finch type bird.
Thanks |

| | | Re: Help with bird id please Many thanks all for the suggestions - it definately looks like a weaver then, just not too sure of which one. It seemed quite happy amongst the other birds so hopefully might survive or find it's way back to it's aviary. |

| | | Re: Help with bird id please I think the colouring on the chest excludes the village or the yellow-backed (alt. black-headed) weaver - My guess would be that of the cinnamon weaver - a species endemic to The Sudan
