August cuckoo

I took my guv'nor with me again, today, as a lucky charm. She had a good view of a kingfisher - I missed it!

However.......

We followed a bird at some distance down a farm track as it flew ahead of us from post to post.







Because of the grey barring on the breast, my first thought was 'Sparrowhawk'. However, a look on the monitor revealed no hooked beak etc, and I then realised that we had followed a cuckoo. I now understand that they are seen even in September.

The colouring looks like a juvenile - but there is no white nape spot as indicated in one of my books.

Lucky you . I have never seen a cuckoo.
If you look carefully at the middle photo I can just make out a white spot which as you say means it is a juvenile.

Nice photos Colin. I`ve only seen one once as it flew overhead. Heard quite a few this year but not seen any

Yes the juveniles do stay around a bit longer. Always great to see...
