I took my guv'nor with me again, today, as a lucky charm. She had a good view of a kingfisher - I missed it!
However.......
We followed a bird at some distance down a farm track as it flew ahead of us from post to post.
Because of the grey barring on the breast, my first thought was 'Sparrowhawk'. However, a look on the monitor revealed no hooked beak etc, and I then realised that we had followed a cuckoo. I now understand that they are seen even in September.
The colouring looks like a juvenile - but there is no white nape spot as indicated in one of my books.
