| | | Crane's breed in Norfolk Found this in today's Independant.
A pair of Crane's have had chicks, and so have broken a 400 year old dry spell. Fantabulous !
They were trying to encourage Bitterns to nest,and it seems the Crane's took a fancy.
The last pair to have chicks in Britain was around 1600 apparently. Thats some amazing news

| | | Re: Crane's breed in Norfolk Hi Pete! A little confused here
The article is dated "Thursday, 17 May 2007" and the page reads;
"The RSPB has transformed what was a carrot field 11 years ago into a square mile of fen and marsh - and a thriving wetland nature reserve, whose visitor centre opens today."
If this is referring to Lakenheath Fen, then isn't the info outdated? It's been open for ages
You say you read it in today's Independent? |

| | | Re: Crane's breed in Norfolk I missed that date on the webpage Nick. How bizarre - yes todays Independant. Get the paper every day for the crossword.
Also confused now - what do you make of it all ???

| | | Re: Crane's breed in Norfolk Isn't Lakenheath Fen in Suffolk too? Darn close to the border if it isn't.
Cheers,

| | | Re: Crane's breed in Norfolk Cranes have been breeding in the Norfolk Broads for over 20 years (since 1982, though not every year since), though many chicks are lost to predators, so success has been limited.
When I was at Hickling Broad a month back a pair had successfuly fledged 2 young.
Pleased they have succeeded at Lakenheath where they have attempted to breed the last couple of seasons too. |
