that you encourage and gives you pleasure, and leaving a noisome mess! Quote: |

| Simple - if you can't, or won't control an animal, you shouldn't keep it! You just don't get it, do you?

Back to the main point, whicle I don't actually dislike cats - far from it, I think they are beautiful animals - I think that too many people take on cats without a thought for the nuisance these animals can cause. It is possible to have house cats which don't go outside unsupervised. My aunt has one, she (the cat, not my aunt!) is 19 years old and has always been inside. This was to prevent her being run over on the road outside as much as anything as, while not a main road, people still drive along it way too fast. The cat's happy and contented, does not need vaccinating for nasties such as cat AIDS or feline leukaemia, etc, and is less likely to become injured in a fight, accident and is 100% unlikely to p!ss off the neighbours with antisocial toilet habits! Even more importantly she has never killed any wildlife.
When dogs cause nuisance there are, rightly, measures than can be taken against the owners. Cats, unfortunately, are not subject to such measures and people think they can just sling them out of the house and leave them to their own devices. Cats can make contented house pets without being inflicted on to the environment at large, with the attendand nuisance to wildlife and non-cat people alike. Yes, I know cats can't be trained but they can be kept in such a way where they are no harm to anyone - animal or human.

| | Re: Fed up with cats Hi vectisbirder, no i have never been abroad in my life, but i do not like the attitude of america on the whole, that aside, people do not just sling their cats outside there are irresponsible owners of any pet but you cannot say to a cat do not do this or that, I have always had two cats in our stables to keep down vermin etc, One of these cats as now retired back to our house and spends all day asleep with birds all around him if the weather permits, in the house all night if my wife permits, We have another cat that belonged to a lady that died from cancer, this lady left a man friend of hers one hundred and twenty thousand pounds to look after this cat, he abandoned her, I grabbed the cat she is over twelve and lovely, the first day she came home with a bird i screamed at her and believe it or not she has never brought one since just mice, but she has her own mind and it would be impossible to control her completely, my wife does not feel the same as me about cats, aland. |

as for cats using other peoples gardens as toilets.
would cat owners consider some one with a large dog, who let it come into their garden and use it as a toilet to be acting irresponsibly. as every time you let your cat out to do the same this is exactly what you are doing, with the added problem of it being an uncontrolled predator of native british wild life. |

I fail to comprehend how so many people posting on this thread are unable to understand the fact that cats are hunters. It is a legacy of thousands of years of evolution. And it absolutely preposterous for anyone to say that "my cat won't hunt" etc. etc. The only times a cat won't hunt are when it is physically incapable of hunting, or when it is physically prevented from hunting.
With regard to the anti-social aspect of loose cats. Again, it is preposterous to try to deny this. Cats, given the chance, will always defecate away from their home ground, and that probably means in a neighbours garden. Nuff said!
If the owner is not prepared to take 100% responsibility for the pet, then they are not a fit owner for that pet.
It cannot be put more simply - Why should a cat owner's neighbours be made to clear up the faeces, (the same goes for dog owners who don't poop scoop). And why should wildlife have to suffer as a consquence the owner's inability to comprehend his/her responsibilites for full 24hrs a day control of their pet.
Any pet owner unwilling to accept that the above is irresponsible behaviour, is quite clearly in denial.

Mike. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
