| | | Sand martin nestbox Anyone ever seen one? I was up at a farm the other day taking photos of belted galloways when I noticed this huge box on stilts with lots of birds whizzing in and out. Closer inspection revealed it to be a martin box with aoprox 150 chambers. Most were even occupied. I have never heard of one & if I had I never would have thought sand martins would use it. I thought it was fantastic. |

| | | Re: Sand martin nestbox Two of my local wildlife trusts have big sand martin 'nestboxes' - essentially large wooden boxes with a lot of holes, covered in sand! They are very well used by the martins! |

| | | Re: Sand martin nestbox These Sand Martin colony blocks/boxes have been used successfully on several nature reserves in recent years and I believe the RSPB are currently experimenting with a similar concept for Kingfishers (essentially a sandy soil-filled barrel on stilts) at sites prone to flooding.

| | | Re: Sand martin nestbox I know in America they put up communal nest boxes for Purple Martins, but I never heard of this before, what a brilliant idea! Did you take photos Fudgey?
