I had discounted Linnets as I could not see a red crown to the head of the male. I agree, everything else fits though.

I am ashamed to admit that I should have processed the image before posting it. It was shot in RAW and after processing, all the colours were visible and even I would have confimed it as being a Linnet  .
Another lesson learnt here - so many to learn too.

My thought processes were 1. Wren - light coloured chest and no eyestripe discounts this. 2. Whitethroat - light colouring extends too high on face.
Any suggestions gratefully received.

I must admit, I had not looked at the Warblers  before posting. Even so, I do not think I would have got the right answer if I had  .
