| | | Netting/Ringing Birds My brother was out early doors this morning and spoke to some people putting up/down poles/nets close to the Fairhome visitors Centre , Upper Derwent valley , Peak District .
They said they were ringing birds , would this be for finches/robins/tits etc that are found locally there or something less common ?
He forgot to ask

| | | Re: Netting/Ringing Birds Using nets, it's probably for smaller birds. Birds are ringed for population and behavioural studies. There are several organisations in this area: SBSG Home Sorby Breck Ringing Group
Ringing in UK is organised by the British Trust for Ornithology. Their site provides a lot of information on the whys and hows! BTO Bird Ringing |

It's probably a BTO monitored constant effort site - periodic ringing for local bird populations. They are done during the breeding season all over the country. It helps to provide data which can then be inputted into a database which in the longterm gives us an indication of the overall health of particular species of birds. They wouldn't be targeting a particular species necessarily - (raptors/owls would be ringed as chicks at the nest sites by special licence)
