| | | How often are you finding dead birds and ones that have been attacked in the garden? Compared to some i`m fairly new to feeding birds, i don`t find it a great site when you have to clear up the mess after a bird has been killed by a predator whether its a cat or bird of prey.
When you start to feed birds you get to know individiual birds and their ways, it knocks you for six when one has been killed in your garden, its not something i`m used to and i guess its the other side of nature, i was just wondering how often this happens to other people ?
You feel as though you havn`t done enough to protect them if you know what i mean, they obviously view your garden as a safe place to bring up their young, i know you can`t be their 24/7 keeping an eye on things, it aint nice to see when you lose one of your birds thats a regular in this sort of way. |

Cats rarely come into the garden due to the dog. When a sparrowhawk kills a bird Im privileged to see such a sight of nature, with the bird hunting to survive. when a cat kills one its not part of nature and very annoying as 9 times out of 10 the bird is left virtually untouched. |

I think most of us that garden for birds etc. feel it when we find a dead bird, but we must bear in mind that when we create a habitat for birds we also create a habitat for predators. I personally do not have a cat problem, but I do have magpies jackdaws and the occasional visit from a sparrow hawk which recently took a collared dove. I do not interfere with the natural events that occur from time to time, I do not `protect` the birds in my garden, but I do provide them with food and lodging i.e. nest boxes. We should also bear in mind that the some small birds in our gardens are also predators on moths ,butterflies and dragonflies etc...Bob
