| | | Young birds in garden 2009 This year I have had:
.blackbirds
.blue tit
.starling
.dunnocks
.woodpigeon
Not a massive selection but its the first year I've seen young dunnocks in the garden and the blackbirds have done very well. They nested in the holly tree and fledged four noisy youngsters! And in the past couple of weeks a newly fledged bird has appeared so they must have had a second brood.
What youngsters has anyone else had in the garden? |

| | | Re: Young birds in garden 2009 Baby birds are such fun to watch, better entertainment than the TV. So far this year the baby birds in my garden have been;
Starlings,
Siskins,
House Sparrows,
Blue Tits,
Great Tits,
Green Finches,
Blackbirds &
Chaffinches.
I love how the Starlings squabble and can empty the bird bath just washing, but Chaffinches are my favourite, I just love the way that they wiggle when food soliciting. |

I agree, young birds are fun to watch. A couple of days ago, my Uncle was telling me about a young kestrel that he saw with one of it's parents on a fence at work-I've never seen a fledgling BOP before. |

I always find it very entertaining when juvenille birds attempt to get onto bird feeders and for the life of them, cannot seem to manage it. Also was very funny to watch a juvenille greenfinch try its luck by attempting to push the parent off the seed feeder, but deffinently got put back in it's place! So far, We've had...
-Great Tits
-Gold Finches
-Green Finches
-Blue Tits
-Blackbirds
-Starlings
-House Sparrow
Saw a a magpie family while walking home from the pub, they don't half make a racket! Quote:

My favourite moment was a couple of years ago, when five young swallows were sat on the fence to our allotment and we watched the parents feeding them all afternoon. We were sat in the greenhouse so they were only about 3 metres away. |

watch the antics of the fledgling sparrows is comical how they chase the adults around no matter what specis trying to get food as long as someone feeds them its hilarious

| | | Re: Young birds in garden 2009 This year seems to have been a particularly good one for young birds. So far I've seen the following younsters on the feeders or in the yard or sheds...
Swallow
Robin
Great Tit
Blue Tit
Chaffinch
Siskin
Nuthatch
Greenfinch
Goldfinch
Dunnock
House Sparrow
Greater Spotted Woodpecker
& one rather clumsy juvenile Magpie who just loves suet treats.
There will be Housemartins too soon - I can hear them twittering in the nest all the time now.
It's most amusing watching the younsters learning how to land on & get the food out the different feeders. Most off them start off very bad at it, but they soon learn. The funniest thing I saw was a young chaffinch standing in the middle of the tray feeder, completely surrounded by easy-to-reach food and begging desperately for it's Mum to feed it - which she did by perching on the edge of the tray, picking up some food from right next to the youngster and putting it into it's beak. She repeated this several times before getting cheesed off and flying into a nearby bush, leaving the youngster still begging and surrounded by food!
Watching a juvenile woodpecker trying to hang from a fat-filled coconut shell in the right position to get it's beak into the hole was also quite hilarious. It fell off several times before working that one out. Once it did, the tits didn't get a look in for quite a while.

| | | Re: Young birds in garden 2009 It sounds like you've both had a good year for young birds, Big Bill and Teknomage. I think I had more last year as I have not seen any young goldies and greenies in the garden yet.
