| | | Robin Nesting in a Hanging Bag Hey there,
A Few weeks ago (or even a month) I posted a thread on this forum explaining how a Robin had made a nest in my garage..
Sounds normal right?
Well Besides there being many great alternative nesting boxes that the Robin could of used, but no he had to go for a hard to see and get photo's of site.
The Robins had decided to nest in a Bag..
And the bag is Hanging... from a hook with my mom's gardening tools in it (she's a bit annoyed about that), So only the top of it is open, which is really hard to get to, because it's hanging and you can't see inside (what a shame) But the bag is right by a window that glass has been removed from (because the glass smashed)
So Now i'm happy to report that in the past few weeks, 2 Robins, one quite fat and groomed (Male) and then a Very scruffy and feathers missing robin, Which i gather is the Female, because she rips out her feathers to use for nesting materials! And i'm so happy about this! It's great, and when the nest was built they just left, and i didn't know what happened, but now there back
And today i think i saw the first signs of chicks!
I Saw the male robin go in, and remove which looks like the faeces (white kinda maggot thing, i know it's poop or something, saw it on spring watch)
and i thought, either he's removing the females, or there's chicks! But i can't hear any, and i can't see inside! Frustrating.
Anyone have idea's how i could possibly see inside to check for eggs, i don't want to disturb them to leave.or is it about being patient? |

| | | Re: Robin Nesting in a Hanging Bag: UPDATE Some very sad news indeed.
Today we found a dead baby bird in front of the garage.. near to where the Robin's were nesting. it had it's little Mohawk and everything..
I'm not sure if a predator got it.. it was in perfect condition..
No scratches, no bleeding.. Nothing
Is it a chance the the parent move it out because it was dead?
And i hope it wasn't the only one? Do robin's lay one egg or more?
Because i really was into watching them in and out and was really looking froward to the surprise of fledglings.
Unfortunately i cannot go look and see how many eggs or babies.. because i would disturb the nest.
I saw the parent Robin this morning on the bench.. that was it.

| | | Re: Robin Nesting in a Hanging Bag Hi Alex .... yes, please don't disturb the nest.
It's quite normal for parent birds to remove and discard dead nestlings ... that's most likely what you found.
Robins lay a clutch of usually around 3 to 6 eggs, though sometimes up to 9.
Fledging should occur between 12 to 15 days from hatching, so it shoudn't be long now before the youngsters emerge from their nest.
As Jenny W rightly said, the female can go straight on to brood another clutch of eggs, leaving the male the task of raising the first bunch. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
