Re: Lack of Starlings

The starling is a bird that for some reason I never get in the garden, we did have a spell a couple of weeks ago but after they finished the fat they never came back!

Re: Lack of Starlings

Hi Bill,

I don't get them in the garden regularly but I have noticed that they appear on the lawn after a rainy period, presumably as the insects and worms have been forced to the surface with the water. Certainly there are far fewer than there was several years ago

Re: Lack of Starlings

No shortage here and lots and lots of young around too. They empty our bird baths in seconds and are an absolute joy to watch.

Re: Lack of Starlings

Must say we seem to have fewer starlings this year than the last few years.Used to get flocks of 20-30 birds plus a creche of 30+ young.
This year the most I have counted at one time are 11 adults and 12 young

Just the opposite here, there are dozens of them, young and old, eating me out of house and home!

Re: Lack of Starlings

We have quite a few here especially when the fat balls go out (by the way last lot I bought had no green nets on them!) They are also flocking together again, which I haven't noticed lately

Re: Lack of Starlings

Thanks for the replies guys was curious if it was a regional thing which it seems to be looking at some of the answers .
Last year it was never ending trying to keep up with the supply of fat balls this year it seems to be a non starter,so far last 3 days have had a visit from 6 straling wether same bird I dont know last year they were flocking all over the feeding station, this year its the turn of the House Sparrow

Re: Lack of Starlings

We've had loads this year. Around 20 plus young ones. It seems to have tailed off now and just a few visiting the garden each day. I wonder where they all went?

Re: Lack of Starlings

I have had Starlings nesting at the end of my house for several years now, but they never seem to come into the garden. They never seem to use the bird bath or table or the feeders or use the pond at all to drink or bathe. I have plenty of tits, finches and thrushes and other birds in the garden, I wonder why this is...Bob

Re: Lack of Starlings

If it is regional, then (our garden in) mid-Kent is lacking this year. We have had one breeding in the roof every year since we moved here. Not this year
I wonder what the BTO atlas shows for this year?
Maybe all the starlings in the SE have gone down to Brighton to roost on the pier...
