| | | Swifts sad news from the RSPB today saying that swift numbers are down 50% this year. The funny thing i thought there were more about this year[whilst Swallows are definetly down around where i live].It would be interesting whether other members have noticed a decline in Swifts. |

I've really noticed it, so thanks to you and the RSPB for confirming the reason for this. Last year my first swift was a singular on May the 9th over my garden - this year, it was practically the start of June! That has been my only home-ground sighting, then twice over the Thames at Hampton Court... where I can usually guarantee seeing them at this time of year! Even then though, there seemed fewer.
I'll be interested in further posts on this worrying news. |

I wonder also about regional variations---perhaps our observations 'up north' differ from more southern climes and also whether there is more of a decline in urban areas than rural/semi rural locations.
ps I've just been on the RSPB news site and they are asking for help in a national survey to establish a pattern of prevalence/decline and there is an online form.

| | | Re: Swifts Same here: they're are fewer swifts above the house but they are more noticible becasue of the total absence of house martins. I haven't seen one yet this year. |
