| | | Re: birds in bulgaria Sounds like you had a great trip rossy. It sounds like a place that would appeal to me especially birds like Golden Orioles and Bee Eaters which I've never seen before. I've heard that Bulgaria is good for Butterflies too, did you see many? Welcome to WAB by the way |

| | | Re: birds in bulgaria I was lucky enough to spend 7 days on a mainly raptor watching trip to Bulgaria last May. What an experience, 12 species from one location 22 in all, I would highly recommend a weeks holiday in the southern mountainous region. I've added a link to my guides trip report for any one who might like to visit some time. Spring birding tour for raptors (06-12.05.2008) |

| | | Re: birds in bulgaria Hi Rossy
Good to hear you had a good and productive time over there.
I have been offered one weeks holiday free plus the second week at half price by an ex pat that has a hotel over there. If we go we will probaly go the last week in April and the first week in May 2010.
Apparently it is an area that is vastly under watched and he wants to find out what is in his area. I have posted on a few forums for information on the area but as I suspected I have had no responses.
I don't know where you went in Bulgaria but this particular area is about 100 miles south of Sofia and about 150 miles north of Thessalonika in a village called Dolno Draglishte. Did you go anywhere near there, or does anyone else know anything about this area.

John | I loved Bulgaria when i went out there birding, my highlight was finding the first comfirmed breeding Pygmy Owls. I cant picture the area you will be staying John i lent my map out and have'nt got it back yet but i would jump at the chance of going, I imaging you will not be to far from the mountains. |

| | | Re: birds in bulgaria It is in the mountains. I did put the village name into Google maps and it gave me an idea of the terrain but as the hotel I will be going to is called the Pirila Mountain Hotel it does give the game away a bit . Here is a link to their hotel. Pirila Mountain Hotel - Bansko, Bulgaria
