| | | Canal life. Not sure if this is a stupid question , but Im going to uni on monday and near by is a canal. I was wondering if anyone could tell me what type of birds and mamals to look out for, appart from the usual ducks . There's also a river near by as well.

| | | Re: Canal life. Lots I should think! It will probably support lots of dragonflies, caddisflies and many species of insects.I should think that, provided the water is relatively unpolluted, lots of fish like rudd. I would hope that it may have water voles-that would be thrilling to see! There should be an abundance of plantlife, yellow flag, bulrushes etc. It would provide insects for bats, frogs for herons. I would suggest eels too. If it links to local rivers then find out about recordings from them.
Good luck in uni BTW. What are you studying? Julie

Excellent choice of subject-very interesting. Hope it all goes well. If it's your first year-expect hangovers and sleeping in the lectures! My daughter did! Julie

| | | Re: Canal life. I live next to a canal which is also a nature reserve, I do not see any mammals but plenty of birds, moorhens, coots, along with mallards on the canal, lots of wrens live close by this is the most popular bird I see, others are blue, great and longtailed tits, reed warbler and reed bunting, blackcap, jays, kingfisher, dunnocks, goldfinches, quite a few robins one of which I have seen hovering over the canal catching insects, swifts love the canal.
This summer has seen alot of dragonflies
The downside is mosquitos |

| | | Re: Canal life. Foxes Mink, Water Shrews may be by the river, possibly even Otter if you're really lucky. Birds not mentioned you may see include Little Grebe, Cormorant, Kingfisher + Grey Wagtail. If there are Alder trees search them in winter for feeding finches such as Goldfinches, Siskins + Redpolls. Canals are effectively green linear corridors, so where there is ample cover you may see all sorts of birds, various warblers spring/summer, winter thrushes on berry-bearing bushes in winter; the possibilities are endless which is what makes natural history so addictive!
Why not keep a diary of your observations + I'm sure we'd love to hear about your highlights. |
