Birds nesting at school

I was very happy yesterday when I took my daughter for a session at her new primary school, where she will begin in September.
There is an outdoor covered play area outside her classroom where I spotted a nest box, then I scanned the eaves and noticed a nest.
As I was asking the teacher if the nest box was used at all, a house sparrow flew out. Apparently they are on their second brood.
I then asked what had nested higher up and was told it was collared doves who fledged last week.
This bodes well for my daughter who has a great knowledge of birds already.
The bonus is I will be able to watch them next year if they return while I wait after school. Maybe I could take some pictures.

Sounds like an excellent education in birds. We get wagtails in the sheds as well as blue and great tits in the boxes. Good luck to her!

Do most schools have nesting boxes installed around their buildings? Seems like a good way to get young kids interested in natural history.

The primary school my children attended in the Uk had an enclosed area under a canopy of trees with slides and plastic play houses for the kids but surrounded by bird nest boxes in the trees, bird feeders, wild plants and displaying other nature info.

It was used by the youngest children in the school.
