kestrel?

while being driven back from college today i saw a kestrel sized and shaped bird that swooped up and appered to hover, however the underside was a stricking and deep chesnut colour, is this still a kestrel?

Sure sounds like one to me -hard to judge for sure without a piccy tho!

Colour can be hard to judge when birds are sillouheted (I can't spell that!) against the sky. Sounds like a Kestrel to me.

Agree with other posters, difficult to tell without pic, the behavious sounds distinctly kestrel-esque. This pretty boy is a 'typical' example of how striking they really are.
