I would have done what you did however and picked it up to place it off of the path.
But as the youngster hopped into the undergrowth it was okay.The parent birds I am sure knew where it was and were probably there to feed it as soon as you were out of sight...

Cheers, thats good to know. There are definitely adult Dunnocks close by as I've seen and heard them singing in the last few weeks. Should be a happy ending for this chick then!
