| | | Kestrel with prey I've just got around to editing my shots from a visit to Bempton Cliffs with Tormentil and Ollie on the 28th May. In amongst all those wonderful seabirds was the occasional kestrel and I managed to grab a few shots. Viewing them at 100% this evening I noticed that in a couple the bird has some sort of rodent in its talons...
I don't think it's a mouse as it looks a little too large and plump. I don't think it's a rat either as it doesn't look big enough for that. Whatever it is there must be plenty about as these two shots were taken just over an hour apart and I doubt that a kestrel would fly around with the same meal for that long.
It's not often you get the chance to photograph a kestrel in flight from above...

| | | Re: Kestrel with prey Some nice shots there Dave. I can't make out what the prey is but it's definitely carrying something.
My shots of this ended up in the bin (got the exposure way out) |

| | | Re: Kestrel with prey You're very kind Roger, but these should really go in the bin too. You can see from the crops that neither is really sharp. It was only the sight of the packed lunch he's carrying that stopped me hitting the delete key.

P.s. I shall have to go back to Bempton. Out of all those shots I've only got about three gannets that I'm reasonably happy with. More practice needed!

| | | Re: Kestrel with prey I would be quite content with any of those shots, Dave, especially the one taken above the Kestrel! Great shots iin my opinion! I wonder if the prey is a young rat? |

| | | Re: Kestrel with prey Thanks for the comments everyone.
Field vole is a distinct possibility but I don't think the nose is quite long enough for a young rat. Could be though, there's not enough detail in the pics to be sure either way. It could even be one of each!
Next time I'll have to get better shots!
