I would have said juvenile male also, from the short tail and lack of definition in the plumage, but... It seems a little early for juveniles to be about, and all the juv. Wheatears I've ever seen were much more "speckly" than either of those birds. A bit of a puzzler

It would be early for a juvenile, but not impossible. Having said that - it's also quite early for adult birds to be starting a post-natal moult. They usually start in late June to mid July, beginning with the primaries and the tail starting shortly after. Male could be a second calendar year bird hence the pale lores and ear-covert? (just lost it's tail for some reason?).
I think they (or at least the male) are juveniles, but dunno really! |
