Ah. I think you're probably too far north and west of their breeding range to have much of a chance of seeing one without trucking down south. As far as I can tell, the nearset birds to you are in the Midlands - Derby/Leicester/Coventry area. I don't know that part of the country at all.
They're great travellers though, if you keep an eye open at your local wetland site in late summer/early autumn, you might catch a post-breeding wanderer after dragonflies. They're fast movers, mind - gone in a flash!
