| | | First reed warbler Saw my first today at a small local marsh, there are plenty of reeds there and I saw it fly up onto one of these, then flitted from one to the other and worked its way up them.
I know they have declined but does anyone know how they are doing at the mo?

| | | Re: First reed warbler They are 'Green listed', CBC/BBS data from 1967-2006 suggest a population change of 106% - not much at all really, overall pretty stable. However, they have declined locally at one nature reserve near me and I believe that in more recent years (than 1967-2006) they have shown a slight decline.
Great birds - ringed the first one of the year last week, but heard first one on 22nd April. |

| | | Re: First reed warbler Yeah do Ringing is brilliant - it gives so much valuable information about so many different aspects of bird ecology and conservation, we would not have anywhere near the amount of knowledge we do if it weren't for ringing. It's a very big commitment - early mornings, lots of hard work, costs money to buy equipment and can take many years to become fully qualified but I would definitely say it's well worth all that. I also got into it because it takes my bird ID skills to a different level
Check out the BTO website, they coordinate the Ringing Scheme in the UK - loads of info on there. |

I looked on the website last night and am considering it, didn't realize under 18s could do it. |
