Yesterday evening, at 7.45 to be precise, as I was walking on my own on Dartmoor, the evening suddenly became full of Cuckoo calls. Suddenly I saw one in the distance acting a little furtively. I watched it as it came close and tried to get a few photos eventually it was only 50 yards away but it was lit by the low sun opposite. It was looking for a nest to lay in. My point is, I think the evening is by far the best time to see them because that is when they lay (unusually). At 4 o'clock I heard they odd one now and again but by 7.30 there seemed to be many. They were there all along though. I certainly will go back in the evening again. Managed a poor photo but was magical to watch them as I saw at least 5 in that half an hour slot and I have never observed the laying behaviour before. This was a rarer brown female as well. |

I am unashamedly bumping the 'Cuckoo survey' again! BBC - Springwatch Blog: Have you heard a cuckoo? |

| | | Re: Cuckoo goes RED! I've heard several calls over the last 3 weeks in the woodland surrounding our office, well, probably more likely in the top of the mountain above us and carrying down.
It's a shame dog walkers etc couldn't be trained to keep an eye and ear out for our fauna tho, bet lots of them have an abundance of local knowledge but never tap into wildlife sites/orgs etc so can't pass it on.

| | | Re: Cuckoo goes RED! I heard and saw my very first Cuckoo on Friday while out walking near my village and I was delighted! We live in North Derbyshire and I don't know what the population of Cuckoos are like. I also heard and saw my first Song Thrush which was fantastic!
There were two Cuckoos that were calling to one another but we didn't see them.
We went out walking again on Saturday and a Cuckoo was sat on top of a fence on a hill. It flew over us and did the Cuckoo call. I wished I had my camera with me!
I didn't realise that Springwatch had a survey going. I'm popping over now |
