I think its a male Gadwall (but wait for expert opinion as I'm just learning about ducks  ).
If it is, these can be such underrated birds. Close inspection of their plumage reveals it to be a quite lovely!

Quite right Ash, its a male Gadwall.
Right too, they're lovely ducks when you see the plumage clearly!
