I've had a nightmare of a morning with my cat.
I've already rescued 2 frogs from her jaws this morning and saw her 'toying' with what I thought was a 3rd and found a tiny baby bird trying to peck back at her.
After shoo-ing her away, I noticed the poor little fella was soaking wet. And not very easy to identify because of this. (Though we've had no rain fall for nearly a week and we don't have any pond's/puddles anywhere nearby.)
He was in a lot of distress so I carried him into the house, cupped in my hands. My 4 y/o son was very helpful in finding a box and tissues to try and place the little bird in, but the bird kept jumping out of the box (despite shivering so much) and eventually climbing up my shoulder to nestle in my hair behind my neck.
I remembered that historically we've had a lot of magpies and blackbirds flying in and around the tree in our garden and did a quick google search on both. I eventually decided that this bird looked more like a baby blackbird.
I then looked for feeding advice from the internet and made the bird some cold scrambled eggs, which he seemed to sift through rather than eat. I left him alone to sleep for an hour or so.
My cat snuck back into the house and my son began shouting at her, which seemed to wake our little friend who began chirping like crazy. When I came back in the room, he had dried off completely and now resembled (what I think) is a blue tit. He was up at the window (obviously having flown from his box) and we could then see one of his parents sitting midway up our huge tree.
I carried him out to the garden and raised my hand hoping he would fly off but he just sat on my finger chirping/calling. I eventually climbed a little up the tree and left him to try and re-unite with his family. He called for about 30 minutes more. Then hopped from branch to branch and flew into a neighbours garden where we still heard him for a good hour.....
I'm feeling a bit guilty having found out a little more about tits and am cursing my ignorance. Would his parents accept him back after he was handled so much by me? Scrambled eggs wouldn't kill him, would they?
Here he is.....He had a very strong grip.
