Wood pigeons and may blossom

i have a red may (hawthorn) in my garden which was absolutely full of flowers, that was until the local woodys got stuck in, now the upper branches are almost bare and the ground is liitered with flowers and leaves they have dropped,
the adjoining gardens have several of the more usual white flowered types, which so far they have not touched, is this usual ? i wonder what the red blossoms have that the white ones don't?
