| | | Re: Great tit and Coal tit We had a little great tit family. Started nest building on the 11th April, layed 6 eggs and on May 1st two eggs hatched. The two chicks fledged on Wednesday evening at about 8pm ....not seen them since but the parents are still around.
Quick question - The female has still been sitting on the 4 unhatched eggs since the two younsters left the nest. I'm sure they won't hatch. Any ideas why she is doing that? Is she just doing the only thing she knows to do with eggs...ie incubate them? |

Barquar | No idea. It seems quite likely that something took it. Last year we found a dying collared dove in the garden with the back of its skull cracked open. Poor thing, there was nothing we could do for it. |

| | | Re: Great tit and Coal tit Coal Tits tend to use more natural sites and so don't use nestboxes as regularly as Blues and Greats. Our nestbox scheme usually has about 50-65 boxes occupied by Blue Tits, 35-45 occupied by Great Tits and 2-9 occupied by Coal Tits (that's rough figures based on the last few years out of around 160 boxes in total). |
