| | | Is this a Sparrowhawk
Could somebody kindly confirm my ID of this bird of prey. I have checked my refernce book and it all points to a sparrowhawk. It landed in my garden this morning, I know it's not a brilliant image and not good enough for the Gallery but it would be nice to know what is stalking my visiting wild birds.
Thankyou

Dai | Thankyou for your reply Dai , this was my first thought too when it appeared, but after studying the reference pics I thought it could possibly be a sparrowhawk as well. Quote: |

Good shot too Barbara, stick it in the Gallery | Thankyou Paul, I got a shock when it landed that I rushed the shot, I have not cropped it at all, just auto contrast and sharpened once, so I'll give it a try and see if it's acceptable Quote: |

Do you know why a male sparrowhawk is called a Musket? Because the original way of hunting with them was to place them in a leather 'mitt' and 'launch' the poor little blighters at the quarry. The sight of them bursting out if the mitt was reminiscent of an explosion from a musket, hence the name.
Aren't you glad I told you that? |

Right, I got that slightly backside-foremost because the gun was named after the bird and not the other way round. Anyhoo....
I've only read about this and not seen any illustrations, but as far as I can gather it came from the Oriental method of casting off small hawks by placing them in a mitt, poised to fly and gently propelling them out of the hand.
If anyone does know where I can see some photos or illustrations of these mitts, I'd be very interested. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
