| | | Chaffinches - odd activity? I had never seen it before until about a week ago. 4 Chaffinches (2M & 2F) sat on my 4 port Nyger seed feeder. Then another pair arrived on the 2 port feeder. They keep coming back now, each day.
I always thought Chaffinches fed on the ground. That's what they've done in the past, just swept up the mess dropped by the others and popped on to the ground table now and then.
They seem to be there more than the Goldfinches now!
Does anyone else have Chaffinches visiting seed feeders?
Best wishes,
Matt. |

Just recently though I've noticed one male fly up to the feed stations for water and caught him recently on a seed feeder, I guess they learn. |

| | | Re: Chaffinches - odd activity? Chaffinches will often feed from feeders as well as on the ground. They are the sort of species that traditionally is a ground feeder, but has adapted to feeding from feeders. I did a study on bird seed preferences a few years ago and Chaffinch was one of the commonest species taking seed from the feeders.
They have also recently taken to feeding from our Nyjer feeders in the garden. |
