| | | Robins and nest boxes Over the years I have encouraged many different species to nest in my boxes. One that I have never managed so far is the Robin. This winter I went all out and put 3 up in an undisturbed area at the back of my work. They are placed in ideal spots where the 3 yellow circles are in the picture. I also have a great tit, starling and blue tit nesting in boxes in close proximety ( orange circles on silver birch tree) The red circle is where the little rascal robin has chose to nest. I am not bothered as long as its safe, but how can you encourage a robin to use a box when there are usually so many good natural nesting sites available to them? You probably cant, but I thought I would ask anyway. |

| | | Re: Robins and nest boxes We have 4 robin boxes up, but they've not been used until this year, when 2 robins are now using what I would have thought are the most unsuitably sited!

| | | Re: Robins and nest boxes I've had no luck enticing Robins to use boxes either... mind you, don't they normally go for tea-pots, flower pots and like using greenhouses and sheds!

| | | Re: Robins and nest boxes Robin boxes should be open-fronted, and should be mounted fairly low - if you can see the box it's probably not suitable. Ideally, it has to be within thick vegetation.

Of the ones in use, one is quite exposed in a cotoneaster bush 2 meters from a public footpath and the other is fully exposed on a wall in the car port.
