| | | Black Terns! We were lucky enough to see 2 Black Terns on our local mere last night!
Blown over by the easterly winds on migration from Africa they were a real thrill to watch as they dipped and swooped into the water picking off insects.
They are classed as Marsh Terns as opposed to Sea Terns and don't plunge dive like the Sea Terns but daintily drop down to the surface to pick up their food.
They were both in full summer breeding plumage so were really black with just a glimpse of grey/white as they wheeled acrobatically in the air above the mere,feeding amongst 20/30 screaming Swifts it was a great sight.....one i'm still smiling at this morning! |
