Hedgewitch - thanks for that. Fumitory - is it a widespread plant? Any weed eating species is going through a tough time in recent years with the amount of herbicides that are used.....and probably hedges are cut more often as well. That just emphasises the importance of the work being done by RSPB and BTO (OK & DEFRA) on encouraging farming that is sympathetic to birdlife.
Still there is no excuse for the hunting. Let's hope the Turtle doves can make a comeback once these things are improved. |

Great photo Snake, they even look approachable! I was sure, well pretty much, that I heard the purring last year so looked around but couldn't see it. Oh well, there's always this year.
Search Google for ' fumitory'. One site describes it as a 90cm-tall annual and flowers pink from April to October, and wraps round things kind of like a climber. It is also a medicinal herb, and can be used to treat acne and eczema. It also suggests which weedkillers to use... they say it isn't really invasive.

I saw some Fumitory growing outside my nieces's house in the middle of a housing estate in Kettering yesterday! When I take her home later today, I'll have a good look round for a Turtle Dove! |
