| | | Hoopoe Quite an interesting sighting by the resident ornithological warden on the Calf of Man, a small island and nature reserve just off the southern tip of the IoM. On three consecutive days he has reported a Hoopoe. Another was seen a day later in the North of the island. (possibly the same one?)
I always thought these were birds were only seen on the South coast of England but may be wrong? Can anyone confirm? I'd certainly love to see one!
Best wishes,
Matt. |

Jim | Be that as it may, I thought they were a passage migrant. And although the south coast of england may be the most likely place to see them according to the RSPB website, they do show up all over the country every now and again. I read on the RSPB website that they can go as far north as the shetlands. |

With a fair bit of luck (or by following up on reports from 'luckier' birders!) it is possible to see a Hoopoe anywhere in Britain, although as they tend to be spring migrants that have 'overshot' their continental breeding areas the majority tend to be found in the south - and most are at coastal sites.
April and May are the months that most are seen but they can occur throughout the summer, and lower numbers may also arrive in the autumn. There have also been a few rare cases of Hoopoes wintering in Britain.

I hope that you get lucky soon! |
