| | | Strange Yellowhammer Behaviour Hello All,
There have always been yellowhammers around where we live, you can hear them often, but they don't often come into the garden. But on Sunday morning I looked into the garden and there it was, pecking around under one of the seed feeders, along with a large pidgeon.
It stayed, along with the pidgeon, on and off all day.
Then I realised it was actually WITH the pidgeon, never moving very far from it's side and always leaving when the pidgeon left.
They were back again yesterday morning and evening and again this morning.
They are definately together.
Is this some weird symbiotic partnership, or just a yellowhammer with a pidgeon fetish?
Anyone?

I'm not questioning your ID skills, but are you absolutely sure it was a Yellowhammer, and not a Canary or other escapee? It certainly seems strange behaviour for a wild bird, but might not be so odd in an aviary bird that's been kept with doves.
Just a thought

T2 | Me Mam knows her birds, it was a Yellowhammer 100%- she confirmed today. Good theory about the interaction with larger birds though
I'll try to get a photo next time I'm there! |
