| | | Are these bins any good? John Lewis - Search results
Hello, we are getting married soon and i wanted to put these binoculars on the gift list. Are they any good/worth the money?
Mainly for bird-watching possibly a little star gazing.
Thanks guys! |

(Is your lovely wife to be going to get the benefit of this present too , or is it really your present .)

| | | Re: Are these bins any good? I'm sorry but I don't think they'd be very good for bird watching. They're 12x25, you really need the second number to be at least four times bigger than the first one.
There was another thread recently where this was explained more technically, but I can't find it at the moment. |

| | | Re: Are these bins any good? I bought a pair of Nikon Action 8 x 40 binoculars from jessops which were tremendous value at £49.99, ive just had a look on the jessops site but they don`t seem to be showing any.
These are the binoculars, i know nothing about Cornwall Cemaras though. http://www.cornwallcameras.co.uk/epa...0Binoculars%22

WAB members shei111 and JB3902 have both recently bought these, and are pleased with them - see:- Binoculars help please

| | | Re: Are these bins any good? You need to decide what you want them for - as has been said, 12x is awful for birding bins, you need around 8 x 42 wide angles, or at the most 10x , but star gazing is quite different, cos you dont need close focus and presumably want some higher mag - wouldnt you be better with a scope for that?
At hand held 12x mag and with a small object lens diameter, you will find the image (what you see) is all over the place, even just with your heartbeat and accurate ID will be nigh on impossible and you probably wont be able to find anything in the object lens anyway, unless its a long way off.
Dont do it.
Find a good review in a birding site and go for a reasonable recommendation at your budget if you cant try first.
Sorry !
Ken

They are a grat pair of binoculars, excellent clarity and focus and they have a great feel in your hand. |

| | | Re: Are these bins any good? 10 x 50 will probably do, but if a casual birder you may still
get shake with x 10.
The vast majority of birders use x 8.
10 x 50 is also likely to be fairly bulky and so will not fit
in pockets or glove compartment.
There is a lot more to finding suitable bins than meets the
eye, and it seems to me you are rushing just because
JL do Nikons.
There are lots of past threads detailing how to buy
carefully. Quote:
