| | | my first nest Here is a photo of what I think is probably a wrens nest. I put this natural nest house up months ago. I noticed during the snow the beginnings of a nest. It has since been completely filled by what looks to me to be a wrens weaving
Wrens nested last year in a similar but smaller nesting house. Male is singing it's little head off. Believe they build a nest then try and attract a female is this right?

| | | Re: my first nest That's right the male builds the nest and the female checks it out if it's not to her standard she won't stay. The male can make several nests! I had wrens nesting over my front door last year in the honeysuckle |

| | | Re: my first nest I do hope he does, they are lovely to see! Unfortunately last year one fell from the nest and I found it dead in the Bergenia when I was tidying it up. |

| | | Re: my first nest we have several nest boxes around the garden, and at least 4 of them contained a Wrenns nest, but not one was used by the female for egg laying purposes, she/he instead built a nest in the top of the cabbage palm tree about 8ft up in the leaves and succesfully reared a large brood
the other nests seemed to be used as roosting nests, especially during the winter months, i wonder where they will choose as a nesting site this year??

they seem equally happy with ones that are in plain view such as on the garage wall , or ones that are semi hidden in shrubs etc,
in fact the more open sited ones seem the most used for the actual rearing the brood,
they seem to like to build in the most unusual places where you would not normally think of putting a box up for them, anywhere from ground level upwards,
well , the ones that inhabit our garden do

Mark. | Hi Mark,
i guess the wrens in our garden are not so strange in their nesting sites choices afterall
it always amazes me how loudly the wren can sing, for something that small!!!
