| | | Re: waterfowl id Hi
was it part of a collection because to me it looks like a Grey Teal - Anas gracilis, an Australian bird.

| | | Re: waterfowl id Got me stuck too! Don't think it's a Grey Teal, it's rather rufous and head markings seem off to me, but not seen one so not sure about that.
My initial impression was perhaps a female Red Crested Pochard hybrid, the head markings and head shape looks very RCP but mantle and breast obviously not ... not sure if they hybridise with wigeon and if they do, probably wouldn't look like this! |

| | | Re: waterfowl id I am with picidae, completely stumped. From the photos I plumped for red-crested pochard, but although the head plumage is right, that body plumage is not right. So I'm stumped, hybrid perhaps?
**edited to add** looking at magpie mick's suggestion, this seems more likely, body plumage fits this better. Though I've never seen one look quite like this as it's missing the red you would expect on the bill.

Mick.. | Looks close Mick.
They hybridise with Cinnamon Teal apparently (obviously the suspect bird is from a collection and hybridisation often occurs with pinned exotics). This might explain the rufous cheeks.

There is a discussion I found on a Red-Crested Pochard X Bahama Pintail but there was no pictures available, so not very helpful. Still can't rule out some RCP heritage here though!
