| | | Which Redpoll? These Redpolls were at Tittesworth Reservoir yesterday on the West hide feeders. Only 2nd time I have ever seen Redpolls so am still uncertain whether they are Lesser or Mealy Redpoll - leaning towards Lesser however as they seem to be quite small compared to the Chaffinch and Greenfinch shown.
I think the last pic shows female and male Redpolls?
Can anyone confirm which Redpolls they are and reasons why?
Cheers

| | | Re: Which Redpoll? I'd go with lessers for those, but I'll leave it to another more experienced redpoll buff to say exactly why...
In Britain it's always best to presume they're lessers unless you have any particular reason otherwise (such as paler, more contrasting plumage, fewer streaks, larger size and some tail ID stuff I can never remember!). Despite mealies also being called common redpolls, they're far from common in the UK (although it does seem a good winter for them).
And redpolls are considerably smaller than greenfinches and chaffinches.

I will assume Lesser for now as I had suspected - unless someone else knows different. Was I correct with the last pic regarding female and male?
Cheers

| | | Re: Which Redpoll? To me they look like lesser redpolls. They seem quite small and not overly pale enough for mealys. Nice pictures
I would say you are right with the male and female, with the male on the right.

Nice to see them on a bird table though - can't remember the last time I saw them at all! | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
