| | Bird thats keeps us awake at night Just wondering if anyone can help me.
Since we moved into our new home about 2 and a half years ago we have noticed a really loud bird call at night which keeps us awake, especially in winter even though we have double glazing etc.
It tends to start around 11/11.30pm and continues all the way through the night, which means that if we wake up during the night it is difficult to get back to sleep.
What is most puzzling is that the problem starts around November and then we dont notice it once you get past easter(ish), with it getting quieter around mid-February.
Has anybody got any idea what the bird could be? It doesnt sound like an owl or nightjar and is not dissimilar to calls you hear through the day. We dont tend to hear it though until after the time mentioned above.
p.s. we live quite close to a retail park and main road which is fairly well lit so i am not ruling out it being a normal daylight hours bird, albeit, im not very clued up |

I don't know, I can't sleep through snoring, I can't sleep through the tapping of my curtains against the wall in the wind, I can't sleep through drunken chavs singing in the street (badly) but I'm quite happy to sleep through bird calls. I can't say birds have ever kept me awake. |

| | | Re: Bird thats keeps us awake at night I know the robin in my garden has been singing regularly through the night especially over the last few months.
He/she tends to sit in a tree that is right next to the street light....

| | | Re: Bird thats keeps us awake at night have a listen to the RSPB website, The RSPB: Birds by name
There is an audio button for all UK birds there.
Where are you located, many birds that live in the uplands during the warmer months move into the lowlands towards the coast during the winter. When you say you don't thinks its an Owl because of the sound, have a listen to various owl calls on the above link. Living near an industrial park and motorway would be an ideal enviroment for an owl such as a short eared or long eared owl. These do not migrate across countries, instead simply move to lower land in the summer. In Kinmel Bay, North Wales, Short Eared Owls arrive from the hills around November and return anytime now. They are seen regularly on and around the industrial estate there. www.northwalesbirding.co.uk :: View topic - Short-eared Owls Kinmel Bay
