Juvenule Great spotted Woodpeckers.
I have a question.
Can you tell the sex of a juvenile by the amount of red on its crown? The reason I ask is I had two juveniles today one had a complete crown of red and the other had seven small patches of red on the crown.

Yes you can, the juvenile female has less red than the male. However if the crown is patchy then it might be that the bird is moulting out of it's juvenile plumage.

The Juvenile female often has slightly less red crown than the male, but it can be difficult to spot it. Of course when adult there's no problem.
